Victor Papanek

"Design has to strengthen its concern for what really matters: life, death, pain, happiness and the welfare of people."
Jorge Frascara

Papanek and Frascara are two designers who have highly impacted how I have come to situate myself as a social designer through my 11 years of academic and professional experience.

I believe in design that:
• innovatively addresses today's social issues
• is grounded on a solid research process
• is collaborative involving the people at the heart of the problem
• is interdisciplinary bringing together expertise outside design
• is measurable for the impacts that it has on society
• is sustained by the people it was designed with and for

I view informed and intelligent design as having a powerful role in affecting positive social change beyond the market-driven aesthetics that it is most popularly associated with.

This is what the selection of work showcased on this website aims to demonstrate.

Biography

I was born in Lebanon and spent most of my childhood between Lebanon and the US. I completed a first class BA in Graphic Design at Notre Dame University in 2003, and a first class MA in graphic design at the London College of Communication in 2007. That year marked the birth of Visual Politics, an archive of socio-political graphics from Lebanon.

I am currently based in London and pursuing my PhD research at the University of the Arts London. The research is developing communication design methods for social integration, taking youth in Lebanon as a case study. I am also involved in lecturing, mentoring and researching at the university.

Alongside my academic endeavours, I am the Design and Communication Director at Uscreates, a social change agency pioneering remarkably inspiring and innovative work in this field.

I took part in a Kufic calligraphy workshop with typographer John Kortbawi at Notre Dame University, where I designed a Kufic arabesque of my first name.

Kufic calligraphy is one of the oldest Arabic scripts, and is characterised by geometrical lines and shapes. Kufic 'knots' are used to attach repeated words or letters together, especially through ascenders, thus forming the arabesque shapes.

The newsletter takes the Arabic letter 'T' as a case study, to trace back the existence of multiple Arabic typographic and calligraphic styles and their usage throughout history.

The styles go back to the early Phoenician, and then progress to Aramaic, Nabataean, Syriac, Kufic and Cursive, to reach the more recent Printed, Digital and Experimental styles.

The mediums and materials chosen to produce the newsletter combine all the techniques used to display Arabic type across the styles, from hand-painted to digital printing.

The postcards visualise a traditional Lebanese welcome in six sequential steps, using cultural vernacular artifacts.

The front of the postcards features a photograph of each step including the welcoming phrase
in both Arabic and English. For example ‘Ahla wsahla fik blebnen’ which translates to 'Welcome to Lebanon’ in English.

The back of the postcards offers a brief explanation of the item on the front in Arabic and English as well. For example ‘Arabic copper coffee set, along with a set of ceramic coffee cups’.

The pack is an educational tool introducing typography students to typographic terms. It brings together a number of cards, each of which personifies two complementary typographic terms having a humorous conversation together. The quotes offer a definition of the typographic terms in a simple yet engaging format.

The following are examples of some of the quotes:

“Without me, ascenders and descenders would be at each other’s throats.”
Leading

“I try my best to reconcile two characters that have gotten too far apart.”
Kerning

Study, BA | December 2002

Organise Don't Criticise is a campaign calling for better urban planning in the six topographically different districts of Lebanon: Beirut, Mount Lebanon, North Lebanon, Nabatiyeh, South Lebanon and Bekaa.

The campaign launches with a conference inviting Lebanese urban designers to participate and present proposals for urban planning solutions in any of the districts.

The campaign’s slogan in Arabic translates to 'Organise Don’t Criticise' thus calling urban designers to stop the talking and start the doing.

The campaign identity used the metaphor of the domino as a building block that could be used to construct chaotically or rationally. Every district was assigned a coloured domino logo which, based on a survey, relates each domino position and colour to the common buildings in its district. Furthermore, the numbers on the six dominoes range from 6/6 for Beirut which has the highest building density, to 1/6 for Bekaa which has the lowest.

As well as a visual identity, campaign materials include posters, participation forms, a booklet, business cards, envelopes and letterheads.

Study, BA | December 2002

The book documents the work of designer and typographer Jonathan Barnbrook.

Barnbrook is known for designing work with a social conscience and a political, liberal agenda. The title of the book, 1+1=3 refers to Jonathan Barnbrook’s strong belief that the sum is always greater than the parts, in whatever one works on.

The book was designed to project the feeling of primitive bibles, which are a major source of inspiration for Jonathan Barnbrook’s typeface design. It is French bound manually album style, with a hard cover, but no spine. The stock of inside pages is butter paper with wood free papers embedded within each spread. Colors were printed on the wood free paper while black was printed on the butter paper, and this gave the images a monotone effect. The cover is printed on canvas.

A concise summary of Barnbrook’s biography runs throughout the book. It starts with the Exordium at the beginning, and then continues as one line at the bottom of each spread to finally reach the Postscript at the end of the booklet. The book is divided into three sections: Founts (old word for Fonts), Works including books, magazines and exhibitions, and Other Media such as moving image, billboards, stone carving and product design.
